Lake District Walks

If like us, you have a lot of summer walks planned you will already be creating a list of peaks to bag, trigs to visit or just places to see. If you need some inspiration, read on for some of our favourite Lake District walks.

With beautiful scenery, the highest peak in England and of course a lot of lakes and hills, the Lake District is the perfect place for walking this summer.

We have put together a list some of the Scarpa team’s favourite Lake District walks and why they are perfect for summer walking. There is something for everyone in the Lake District, from big trekking days bagging Wainwrights to family walks and walks with wild swimming spots on route!

Walks for peak baggers

The Coldedale Round

Want to tick off 5 Wainwrights in one day? The Coledale Round is the perfect walk in the Lake district for anyone looking to bag a handful of peaks in one go!

The walk takes you to the top of 9 hills; Stile End, Sand Hill, Sail, Outerside, Kinn, Hopegill Head, Hobcarton Crag, Grisedale Pike, and Crag Hill and includes 5 Wainwrights.

Probably the toughest walk in this list – but the amount of peaks in one go is worth the tough steep terrain!

Walks for history buffs

Castlerigg Stone Circle

If you like a side of history with your walks – then Castlerigg Stone Circle is the perfect place to visit. Dating back to around 3000BC Castlerigg Stone Circle is thought to be even older than Stonehenge and is set in beautiful surroundings of the Lake District!

The Stone Circle is accessible direct from Keswick and only takes around half an hour from the town centre.

Walks for day-trippers

Witherslack Loop

Some parts of the Lake District are very remote, so getting there, having a walk and getting home can make for a long day.

However, there are plenty of great walks in the Lake District near the M6, making them easily accessible for a day trip. The town of Witherslack is only 15 minutes from the M6 and is the start and end point for the Witherslack Loop.

Walks for families

Cat Bells

If you are looking for a Lake District walk which is more than a flat loop around a lake but still family friendly – Cat Bells is perfect. With walks of around 3.5 miles Cat Bells is a family friendly peak with amazing views from the top and a perfect introduction to the Lake District’s peaks for your little explorers!

Alfred Wainwright said of Cat Bells “It is one of the great favourites, a family fell where grandmothers and infants can climb the heights together, a place beloved.” and he knew a thing or two about the hills and mountains of the Lake District.

Most walkers begin their route at Hawse End, where there is a car park, although if you are coming from Keswick you can catch the ferry across the lake for a leisurely start to the walk.

The walk is easy and well signposted, so no navigation skills are needed. simply follow the stone path as it begins to climb, from here the route should be clear, leading on to a wide ridge.

Make sure the kids are ready for a walk in the lake district with some dedicated walking shoes – designed for little feet.

Terra S Kid GTX

The Terra S Kid is based on one of our most popular walking boots – the Terra. This version has been redesigned for children’s feet and is a perfect first walking boot.

With a tough suede upper and Gore-Tex lining the Terra S Kid is ready for all the Lake District can throw at it.

Walks with a wild swim

Easedale Tarn

There are plenty of wild swimming spots in the Lake District so picking one is hard… but the remote feel of Easedale and the walk to get there will make it all worth while.

Starting in Grasmere you will pass many other swim spots on the wat up too – with waterfalls, plunge pools and the tarn itself you will be spoilt for choice!

The route is around 6 miles of rocky paths – which should make the swim at the end even more deserved!

So here are some of our favourite Lake District walks, but there are so many more to choose from! Let us know on Facebook or Instagram which is your favourite!
