How to choose a walking boot

We have put together the ultimate guide to SCARPA walking boots. This guide will help you to choose the right walking boot for you and for your adventures.

At SCARPA we have been making walking boots for almost 100 years, and whilst some things have changed over the years - our commitment to making amazing boots for every challenge hasn't.

Our boots are made for vastly different objectives  - from fast and light adventures to summiting peaks - with lots of other options in-between.

So with so much choice how do you find the right pair of walking boots for you?

Hopefully this guide will help you find the right SCARPA walking boots for you.

The first step in choosing a pair of walking boots (or shoes) is identifying some key points:

What terrain will you be walking?

Terrain is key in picking a walking boot as this is what your boot will be coming into contact with! If you will encounter lots of rough terrain you might want to focus on durability.

As well as terrain - you need to consider the elevation of your walk - will you be doing lots of ascending and descending hills? Or more low-level walking?

How much will you be carrying?

What you are carrying has an influence on what boots to pick as large heavy packs need added support and stability from your boots.

Or you might be going fast and light - so favour agility in your footwear.

What time of the year/ conditions?

Just a fair weather walker? Or are you looking for something to tackle winter conditions? What time of year and conditions you walk in will determine how much warmth, weather proofing and protection you will need.

Plus there is the question of crampons! Some of our walking boots (and all of our mountaineering boots) are crampon compatible.

So all of that considered - here are some suggestions for which SCARPA boots are best for different types of walkers!

For fastpackers, speed merchants and anyone looking to move fast even on technical terrain a lightweight boot is best.

All Rounders

Whilst no one boot can do it all - there are some which come pretty close - most people won't fit neatly into a category and will do a whole variety of walking throughout the year - so a good all-rounder is a great boot to have!
