The School Holidays are on the horizon - so if you are struggling to keep the kids entertained for 6 whole weeks, why not introduce them to walking!
Whilst the very thought of being torn away from screens and taken for a walk may strike fear into your little ones - there are some great benefits of walking as a family.
Why should you walk with kids?
Walking can be a cheap, full day activity - so if you are struggling to keep the kids entertained, but don't want to spend a fortune, then a walk can be great. Pack a picnic, and head out somewhere local for a super budget friendly family activity.
There are also loads of benefits of getting outside into nature to your families physical and mental health.
Top tips for walking with kids
Be prepared
Preparation is key - control all of the controllables!
Pack everything you need (and those just in-case extras) plan a route and make sure you know where you are going.
This will help to control the chaos and allow the whole family to enjoy the trip!
Snacks are your friend
This one goes for the adults too - walking is great exercise and can burn off a lot of calories - so make sure you have some snacks ready to replace the ones you've burnt.
Don't let the weather put you off
In the UK even in the summer, you cannot guarantee that you will have good weather - so waiting for a good weather day may mean you are waiting a long time.
So embrace bad weather - take the right clothes and don't be afraid to get wet and muddy.
Try an activity
If just walking isn't enough to entertain your little ones - then turn your walking into an adventure!
Follow a trail or try Geocaching - where you use an app to follow co-ordinates and find hidden items! This will get your game loving kids having fun on a walk without them knowing it!
Wear the right clothes and shoes
You don't need to spend a fortune on expensive gear to get out walking with the kids - just make sure that you have some essentials and dress for the conditions - which will make them a lot more comfortable.
For shoes - the two key things are comfort and grip!
You don't want to hear complaints of sore feet when you are miles from the car - so getting comfortable shoes is important
If you are venturing off the paths and tracks then grip is essential - look for shoes and boots with pronounced lugs and a sole designed for walking.
For longer distance and more technical terrain - walking boots are recommended as they provide more protection and grip - plus they will make your little ones feel like a "proper" walker!
