The Love of Walking - National Walking Month Reading What are Cloud Inversions and where to find them 3 minutes

If you have opened Instagram in the last few years you will almost certainly have seen a cloud inversion. This trendy natural phenomenon is nothing new, but seems to have gained popularity recently amongst hikers and social media users alike.

Thanks to the beautiful vistas a Cloud Inversion creates, and the hard miles it can take to get to see one - seeing a Cloud Inversion is high up on the list of lots of hikers.

What is a Cloud Inversion?

A Cloud Inversion, or to give it its technical name a Temperature Inversion is a layer of cloud which gets trapped at lower levels - so when you climb up a hill or mountain you break through the cloud and get stunning views with cloud cover down below.

What causes a Cloud Inversion?

On clear nights when the weather is calm and stable - cold air can sink into the valleys. As the air cools it hits the dew point when moisture in the air condenses turning into cloud.

With this cold air sitting near the ground - as the sun comes up it warms the air above the cloud and prevents it from rising.

So if you climb above this layer you should reach a point where you climb above the cloud and get the amazing views of a cloud inversion.

How do you find a Cloud Inversion?

Like everything when Mother Nature is involved - there is no guarantee - but there are some things you can look out for to give you the best chance to spot one.

Spring and Autumn are the most common seasons to see a Cloud Inversion - but the can occur at any time of the year - as long as the conditions are right.

If the weather is cold and clear overnight and there is moisture on the ground or nearby in lakes, lochs or rivers - you have a good chance of seeing an Inversion.

Staying safe when hunting for cloud inversions

As getting above the cloud in an inversion generally means hiking through some foggy conditions - it is important to take some steps to stay safe.

The right gear

Pack layers and waterproofs as changeable weather is almost guaranteed - make sure you have a good pair of walking boots which can handle the terrain!

Navigation

As you will be walking through the cloud to reach the amazing views above you need to be able to navigate even with poor visibility. Having a map and compass or GPS device can help keep you on track.

It is also a good idea to familiarise yourself with the route before you go! Know the route and terrain and have a plan on how to get back down again if conditions change.
