Name: Sam Whittaker
DOB: 29/06/1977
Hometown: Sheffield
Sport: Climber
My passion for climbing started about 20 years ago on the gritstone outcrops of the Peak District with my Dad and our dog Jake. We used to climb on the grit and it was there where I learn to boulder and trad climb. After years of onsighting and headpointing on the grit, I made the headpoint ascent of my own route Appointment with Death, E9 6c at Wimberry.
By this time climbing was my life and it was leading me on some amazing climbing adventures around the world, often big walling trips to places such as Peru, Morroco, America, and Kyrgyzstan. It was in Kyrgyzstan that I did a new route called From Russia with Love, which included an onsight lead of E7 6b.
Throughout my career, I have worked in the climbing industry. From managing Rope Race climbing wall in Marple, to working as a sales representative for Prana and Metolius, I am now the co-owner of my own wall in my hometown of Sheffield - The Climbing Works.
In recent years I have become more focused on bouldering and sport climbing having some amazing trips over the last year to Rocklands (South Africa) and Hueco Tanks (Texas, USA). By improving my bouldering I have been able to push my sport climbing to a new level. I currently climb sport 8c, E9, and Font 8b boulder.
When I do have some spare time (which isn't often!) I’m a Techno DJ, spinning tunes down at the Climbing Works and playing out in clubs.
