I’m a husband, father, physiotherapist, university lecturer, coach and athlete! So I know what it’s like to train for races and adventures while keeping balance with all aspects of life. I’m also a major trauma survivor, which shows that no matter what adversities you face in life, with enough focus and dedication you can achieve anything!

Tell us about your successes so far?

I recently won the Summer Spine Challenger and set a new course record which is certainly my best race execution to date.

In the past I’ve won various other races from trail marathons, 30 miles through to 100km (Race to the Stones) as well as podiums at other 30-100mile races.

What are you working on? What are your goals for the future?

I’m growing my coaching team (HP3) in order to share my knowledge gained throughout my career as a sports physiotherapist, coach, academic and athlete. To share what I’ve learned on my personal journey back to health and fitness. Through my role with Scarpa I hope to share what I have learned to help as many people as possible.

On a personal level I want to test myself at the big international 100’s – Western States and UTMB.

Why do you run? What do you love about running?

Because I can, and because I shouldn’t!  I love the freedom and variety of trail running gives you.  The mental, physical and spiritual therapy it offers.

With all my athletes, even road runners / triathletes I encourage them to get off road for some Shinrin-Yoku (forest bathing) for all the mental health benefits it offers.

Which Scarpa shoe is your favourite?

The Golden Gate Kima are simply the best shoe I’ve come across.

They fit like a glove round the heel and mid foot, with a nice wide toe box. Superb grip and rubber compound to stick to all surfaces. A good level of cushioning, plus the carbon plate and rocker to aid propulsion.

I used these for the Spine Challenger 110 miles and they were perfect for all the varied terrain on offer, from technical trail through to open fell, bogs, fields, road and everything in between.

Tell us about your best day running?

The time I managed to run for 30 seconds on the treadmill at Uni a year after breaking everything except my left arm in a car crash. I’d been told I’d never run again, I proved them wrong.

Beyond that I cherish the days I can go running in the mountains with my friends, I’m grateful my body will allow me to still do that.

What do you do away from your sport?

If I’m not running or cycling then it’s helping others become the best versions of themselves through my coaching business or teaching the next generation of physiotherapists.

At home it’s playing with my young kids and cooking – being a chef was a childhood dream of mine but I didn’t fancy the hours they do!

Where is your #NoPlacetooFar?

I love running in the Alps with long flowing trails. A couple of friends and I are planning to run the Haute Route in the next few years.
