So get to know our Approach shoe range and find the right pair for you.
What is an approach shoe?
Approach shoes are designed for climbers to wear to get to the crag or wherever they are climbing - hence approach.
However there is so much more to an approach shoe than just getting you to your climb - they need to be tough, to deal with rocky terrain, comfortable for long approaches and have grippy soles for when the terrain gets steep.
Approach shoes are now popular with more than just climbers. Their nature makes them great for fast and light hiking or walking and scrambling when the terrain gets tough.

What is the difference between approach shoes and hiking shoes?
Whilst there are some similarities between hiking shoes and approach shoes (and some of our approach shoes borrow features from our walking/running shoes) approach shoes have some features which make them suitable for rough terrain.
Sole

One of the key differences between approach shoes and hiking shoes is found underneath - approach shoes tend to use stickier more durable rubber to help with grip and traction.
You will also find flat areas around the toes and/or heel which are called climbing zones -these help when edging or smearing.
Stiffness
Approach shoes will be stiffer than hiking shoes, making it easier to stand on small edges and give you confidence underfoot when ascending!

Protection
As they are designed to be used in rocky terrain approach shoes will have extra protection. This normally comes in the form of a protective rand which runs around the shoe.
This protection is also evident in the upper materials - with tough materials such as suede preferred to add protection and durability,
How to choose an approach shoe
Approach shoes come in a huge range of shapes and sizes - with a raft of different features. So picking an approach shoe can be tricky. Here are a few things to consider when looking for an approach shoe.
Terrain
Terrain is key when choosing an approach shoe, the more rocky and technical, the more you will need from your approach shoe. Some shoes have rands to protect from rocks and climbing zones for better purchase on rock.
If your walk in is flatter or mainly on paths and trails - then your shoe choice may be less important.
Conditions
If your approaches are often wet or snowy then choosing a pair with a Gore-Tex membrane may be a good choice. For hotter climates and dry conditions a lighter more breathable upper is going to provide more comfort!
What are you carrying
If you are hauling a heavy rack or camping gear and have a heavy pack it is good to have more support in your approach shoe - a mid height shoe adds more ankle protection.
