Scarpa to bring new life to trees destroyed by Storm Vaia in Alleghe

Scarpa to bring new life to trees destroyed by Storm Vaia. Trees are at the very heart of mountain life. Their trunks, their branches and their leaves. Every atom of a tree is a symbol of nature’s perfection and beauty. And that’s why a company that lives in symbiosis with the environment – like SCARPA – could not just do nothing after the disaster of Storm Vaia.

There’s a date that’s carved into the memory of anyone who loves the mountains: 29 October 2018. Estimates indicated that 42,800 hectares were struck by the fury of the storm, and 14 million cubic metres of timber was destroyed in Veneto, Trentino Alto Adige, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Lombardy.

More than two years after the catastrophe, today the efforts to return to normality continue. Hence SCARPA’s decision to intervene, supporting an initiative by the Dolomicert Institute for Certification and Research which focuses on removing trees uprooted by the violent weather event and then reforesting the area, working to a special plan developed by the Veneto Region.

Scheduled for June, the intervention will involve a wooded area overlooking Lake Alleghe and close to the village centre, which was particularly hard hit by the destruction. CEO Diego Bolzonello: “Our company has mountains in its DNA, and from the outset has been a mouthpiece for a culture based on respect for nature”

The work will restore the protective, environmental and carbon-fixing functions normally carried out by the forest. The saplings will be planted and then supported by cutting the grass which would obstruct their light and nutrients; those which do not take root will be replaced over a two-year period until the work is completed.

“We are deeply affected and devastated by the serious consequences of Storm Vaia”, says Diego Bolzonello, CEO of SCARPA. “Hence our desire to create a project that will bring new life to the woodland near Lake Alleghe. Our company has mountains in its DNA, and from the outset has been a mouthpiece for a culture based on respect for nature, as shown by the recent launch of our “Green Manifesto”, a programmatic commitment that sets out the company’s sustainability principles and realises them in the form of new initiatives which bring SCARPA into line with the highest international standards. The initiative we’re presenting today cuts to the heart of this mission, as well as being a sign of hope for a region which is still suffering the effects of such a dramatic event”.
